Alexandra Zvagelsky is an East Village based cinematographer and director, shaping images that feel haunting and deeply human. A first generation Russian/ Ukrainian filmmaker, her work is defined by a raw visual language; providing a more dynamic window into the interior lives of women. Her breakout film, “The Penitent Magdalene” (2022), premiered at Anthology Film Archives’ New Screen Festival in 2023, followed by a DCTV screening of her award winning 16mm short, “Колыбельная “(2023)— marking back to back premieres at two of New York’s most vital institutions for independent film. Whether behind the lens or in the director’s chair, “Sasha” approaches cinema as authorship…using light and texture to preserve what history risks erasing.
In “Колыбельная”, the filmmaker explores inheritance and loss through the intimate act of cooking her late mother’s crepes. Rediscovering old family negatives and recipes, she reconstructs the tastes and rituals of a woman she can no longer share her life with...finding connection, grief, and solace in the textures of memory.
